* the importance of sensory motor development, movement and body readiness to success in reading
*the role of story, rhyme, drawing and song in reading readiness
*current brain research – the changes that happen between 6 and 7 years of age (When do they teach reading in Finland?)
* differing timetables, different needs of boys and girls
* “screen time” – what we know and do not know about its effects on the developing brain
* what parents can do to lay a foundation for literacy and a life long love of reading
Dayna Davis, primary teacher at Cortes Island School, will facilitate the evening. Dayna has 25+ years experience working with young children, and is the parent of 2 grown children. She draws inspiration from her background in Waldorf Education, the work of Gordon Neufeld (Hold on To Your Kids), Carla Hannaford (Handbook For Global Parenting), Barbara Coloroso (Kids Are Worth It) Kim John Payne (Simplicity Parenting), Rahima Baldwin (You Are Your Child’s First Teacher), and others.
